My enthusiastic six and seven year old students are eager to learn about the world through the use of math, science and engineering educational materials. First graders learn by actively participating in hands-on learning experiences. The math, science and engineering resources that I am asking for in my grant such as Magna-tiles, ten frames, activity cards and timers, are designed for students to work cooperatively to problem solve and develop their critical thinking skills. The math and science materials are common core aligned. Students work cooperatively to naturally solve real world problems as they play and explore! My students will use these materials during station and small group work time, which will allow them time to practice skills we have learned independently, and showcase their learning. Station and small group practice has been proven to improve students comprehension. Especially at young ages, students thrive when working cooperatively through exploration.
