My students are a diverse group of young individuals from a coastal city still trying to recover over a decade later from a devastating hurricane that virtually wiped out our small community. While my high school consistently scores among the highest standardized test scores in our state, we are drastically underfunded and subject to severe budget cuts each year due to the absence of a tax base after the storm. My group of students are those young women and men who may not always do the best in academic classes, but have found something they are really interested in, and awesome at, in running a small business. Four years ago, we came up with the idea of not just teaching students about owning and running a business, but actually doing it! With the help of local businesses assisting with the start-up inventory, we began running a campus coffeehouse for the benefit of both students and faculty.
