Hive 105 is home of the Busy Bees. They are a lively group of 2nd graders who love learning and work hard. We are an urban school that serves a wide range of students: kids from the hills whose parents are affiliated with the university, as well as kids from the flats who don't have many kid-friendly books at home. That means that the time they spend in school reading has to really count. Providing a large range of readable, engaging, books is a way to support these struggling readers and help them develop independent and curious minds. They love trickster stories (Lon Po Po), books about kids or animals who have adventures (My Father's Dragon), and tales about friendship (Charlotte's Web). They are building their reading stamina every day and look forward to sharing their insights with their partner at the end of reader's workshop. It is not uncommon for them to groan with displeasure when I announce that we have to stop reading!
