Freshman year is a critical time for building literacy skills, and ISBE report cards reveal that 84% of African-American 8th graders are not meeting expected performance on IAR literacy targets. This program will use research-based literacy instructional methods to teach grade-level academic vocabulary, explicit teaching of reading comprehension strategies and skills, explicit teaching of writing skills, and practice in multisyllabic word reading. I am seeking support in providing at least 25 devices to Chicagoland area African-American youth whose academic history would make this literacy intervention important for their future academic history, but are currently without a device to access the course.
