I work in a non-screened public school in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country. We serve over 600 students in grades 6 to 12. Of the diverse student body, 92% of students are economically disadvantaged, 10% are English Language learners and 17% have disabilities. We strive to create a compelling, rigorous, supportive and fun environment for all of our students. Our goal is to prepare students for college success. Over 90% of our graduating 8th graders choose to remain in our school for high school. This statistic demonstrates the security and level of support children and families feel with respect to our institution. Our students enthusiastically participate both in math tournaments and overnight camping trips. They volunteer at the botanical gardens, museums, labs and shelters. Despite the chaotic neighborhoods from which they hail our students overcome and succeed. We have a 95% on-time graduation rate and an 85% college matriculation rate.
