My students are diverse in many ways. I have equal number of males. Approximately 40% of my students are black, 40% of my students are white, and 20% of my students are Latino. Because my school is a large urban high school, we are culturally, ethnically and racially diverse. The school is classified poverty because over 70% of our student body is on free and reduced lunch. Many of the students are challenged to see outside of the door of our high school or even their own backyard. Many have not had life experiences which challenge them to think beyond their own hometown. Many students are the first to graduate from high school so attending a vocational school or college is not a value supported in the home. But because my school is so diverse, it is a wonderful community of teachers and staff who push our kids to be their best and think beyond high school. The teaching staff is an incredible group of people who truly care and support their students.
