Louise Rosenblatt, a prominent reading researcher, spent a lifetime imploring teachers to make reading a priority in their classrooms. She asserted, “We should help young people to discover the power of literature to enable us to experiment imaginatively with life, to get the feel and emotional cost of different adult roles, to organize and reflect on a confused reality, and to give us pleasure through the very thing that accomplishes these things. Both our classroom atmosphere and selection of reading materials should, therefore, be guided by the primary concern for creating a live circuit of readers and books”. I would like to provide a variety of books in my classroom to engage a variety of students’ interests. These books will be used for book clubs. Students will be able to choose the book they want to read. They will work with other students discussing and dissecting the book. Hopefully, the variety of choices plus the student-led focus of these book clubs will engage the students and thus create lifetime readers and lifetime learners.
