The best mathematicians are the ones who can think creatively or outside the box. To be successful problem solvers, students need to learn to develop a hypothesis, test it, and reevaluate when necessary. This project aim is to strengthen these traits through mystery based challenges where students break into a locked box. Students will be engaged in active problem solving that is fun and relates to the mathematical content being taught. They will figuratively and literally be thinking "outside the box" to find solutions to break into a box with these locks, lock boxes, and mystery solving items. Online there is an open source database of subject based breakout activities that have been developed by other teachers. In addition, I can create new break out modules that are specific to my teaching. I hope this will help my students improve their creative thinking and become more interested in problem solving.
