Our students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at a large middle school (2,200 students) in South Central Los Angeles. They pack the library each and every day to read, do homework, socialize, ask questions, and type papers. There is often a line of more than thirty kids eager to check out books during lunch. Many of our students are struggling readers, while others are tearing through high school level materials. In both cases, they love to read. After hundreds of kids have manhandled a book, you might imagine that it ends up torn, wrinkled, and generally falling apart. I hate to send them off with such tattered material; I believe it sends a negative message. Our students deserve pristine, new, crisp books to enjoy. Sadly, there is just no money. Without donations, these students will not receive any new materials for the library this year, and maybe even next year. The way they beg for new titles by their favorite authors or in an exciting series, it just breaks my heart.
