The majority of my students are second language learners who have not been exposed to a diverse vocabulary. Due to their cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds many of my students do not have opportunities to hear, and see correct English. They need the opportunity to hear examples of the language from others. They are eager 4th graders who love to read. They have a thirst to expand their vocabulary, and are already showing me that they love writing. My favorite part of our day is watching their eyes light up as we read the mentor texts. They love hearing the new book for the week and they also enjoy trying to write in the new style we are learning. I want the opportunity to continue our study of mentor texts through these picture books so I can continue to inspire life long readers and writers.
