I teach in a rural school with 87% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. Many students live in impoverished areas and lack access to any type of music programs. Specifically, our Drum Circle, led by myself and Mr. Rod Flowers, a school custodian, includes 5th and 6th grade boys and girls who express an interest in music. This is usually the only opportunity they have to showcase their talents. Research has shown various types of music expression increases academic focus and decreases negative behavior as well as self doubt. Last year, one parent told us his son came out of his shell through Drum Circle, talking more and participating in school more, despite his tough life at home. We saw dramatic changes in students last year, just using buckets and drumsticks.
