The students who enter reading intervention in 6th, 7th and 8th grade share common experiences in reading as not being as successful as many of their peers. Our struggling readers come from a various background of African American, Hispanic, and white ethnicity in a rural community as well as a Title one school. These characteristics represent a diversified group of learners whose common characteristics are a strong community of family. Most students will forgive missing related arts as long as it allows them to have some fun and success--which is always evolving as most students require one or more years to increase reading skills. Engagement and motivation are key to our students’ learning and they love the excitement of being able to move, converse, and experience various new things.
