Engaging students with lots of hands-on manipulatives and activities is one way to keep their minds on the task at hand. I have seen amazing results when students learn through hands on activities in which they do not even realize they are learning the curriculum! As a 21st century teacher, I also need to combat the need for electronics and video games. Through the use of hands-on manipulatives I am seeking to have in my classroom, students will learn cooperation skills, listening, and following directions skills, as well as many other skills that come from activities that require conversations and interdependence. At the same time, we are saving paper because the learning is hands-on in lieu of the traditional worksheet. I am requesting hands on Math experiences with games, regrouping kits, place value cubes, kits that include hands-on math, magnetic manipulatives, and dry erase markers. All activities reinforce what I have modeled and taught students in class. All students will benefit from the hands-on approach for each skill taught. Manipulatives offers each mathematician a tool to enable mastery in math.
