Students come to me with a wide range of emotions. Anger, sadness, confusion, and hurt. The carpet and bean bag chairs will provide a space for the students to calm down. The hand fidget items and sensory toys will give them something to focus on while they are in the calming space. Together or on their own, the students will read books to help them learn how to be mindful of their emotions and feelings. We will role play with the games to allow the students to practice the skills they are learning. The Dilly Ocean wave projector will give the students a visual to help them focus and calm down. My non readers will be able to listen to books on the CD player or soothing music. The goal is to calm down, refocus, make a plan and then return to class with a better attitude and ready to learn. They can listen to calming music and sit in soft chairs. They can choose the items that best help them refocus. Then they can have meaningful conversations about their behavior and how they can change it. They will role-play scenarios in order to practice the new skills they have learned. All of the items in this calming space will play a role in helping the students get ready emotionally to get back in class.
