I teach some of the most earnest and intelligent students in metro Atlanta. Our school is diverse - a place where more than 75 languages are spoken. My students know that in order to succeed in life, they must push themselves hard because no one else is going to do it for them. Every day, my students face many obstacles to getting an education and the effects of poverty stand between them and coming to school. Many times, parents ask them to stay home to work to pay bills or to watch the younger siblings so that they can go to work. Yet, every day, my students come to class and are willing to put aside whatever is on their minds so that they can get an education and help themselves and their families. The students who come to class want to explore literature, economics, history, and science. They want a chance to go to college, even though many of them struggle through the trials of being an immigrant or a child of immigrants.
