Storyworks is a magazine-like subscription for students, which includes a wide range of genres and topics, perfect for building comprehension skills in multiple types of texts and exposing students to interesting, relevant, and rich reading material. The online resources, including videos to build background knowledge and differentiated versions of many of the articles (which can also be shared with students digitally), will help me better address the range of existing skill levels found in my class. My students will benefit from applying what they read into the debates, plays, discussions, and writing tasks that accompany the texts. My goal with this project is to create experiences for my students that authentically connect to the skills and knowledge we are working to acquire. As part of this, I am also requesting a Celestron Travel Scope and moon filter in order to send our investigations about the universe home with students at the end of the day. Not only will I be able to share my love of stargazing with my students in way that gives them the opportunity for genuine scientific inquiry based on what we learn in class, but students will develop and demonstrate responsibility as they learn to use and care for this science equipment.
