There's a lot of talk about flexible seating and how it can be used in a classroom. First graders are little people in constant motion and with short attention spans. Asking them to sit in one spot all day is next to impossible. This past school year I started to incorporate choice of seating in my classroom and I saw a change right from the start. All of a sudden my students were eager to write because they could choose a spot and seat type that best helps them learn. It was amazing to see how focused they can be when given a simple choice of where and how to get their work complete. THE NEXT STEP...I would like to incorporate more kinds of seating into my classroom. Bouncy bands that attach to leg chairs for my students that need to move in order to concentrate, sit discs for students who want to work at low tables or on the carpet with a clipboard, and portable lap desks where students can move to a quiet spot and and still have a seat and table. It's amazing how much small changes can make in a classroom. Students that are able to move, find a type of seat and a comfortable place to work that meets their needs are given the best opportunity to be successful in school. I hope you will consider funding this very important project!
