Most of my students would rather be anywhere but school. They are creative and love drawing, singing, or playing sports, but they hate to read...mostly because they are far below grade level. My school is a Title 1 public charter school where most students are on free or reduced lunch. Many students are living in unstable households, but others have very supportive families. The broad spectrum and large number of students makes it difficult for the faculty to meet every student's needs. Behavior issues are frequent, and classroom management is regarded as the most important aspect of our teaching. Many of my students receive detentions or other disciplinary actions due to disruptive classroom behavior. They are constantly redirected to what they should be doing, but they are rarely celebrated for their successes. Showing them appreciation and rewarding them for good behavior and academic success makes a huge difference in my students' lives.
