My school is surrounded by cornfields and apple orchards. It is a small rural school with about 475 preschool through 4th grade students. My students come from rural or small town settings. About one third of my school's population consists of open enrollment students who come from neighboring local school districts. The students come from a variety of socioeconomic groups, but there is a high percentage of them that are economically disadvantaged. Some of my students come to school with very little early education and world experiences. Some of these students do not see the importance of reading and do not like to read. I am hoping to instill in them the love of reading. I am hoping that through reading they will be able to experience some things that they have not experienced in real life. I also want them to know that they can make a difference in their own community.
