My students are five years old and full of wonder. They come from primarily low-income and minority families. My school (new to me this year) is on a mission to grow enrollment and immerse themselves in the community via community-based, integrated and thematic learning projects. I'm honored to be part of this change. Top priorities for my school include character development, ethical responsibility to society, and problem-solving skills. Our school is small - only 248 students; we only have two kindergarten classes. This is a great opportunity for creating relationships with students and families. Given the unique challenges and goals of my school, many opportunities for change and influence are present. Cultural awareness and sensitivity are paramount. These kindergarteners need to be immersed in language and relationships and opportunities for hands-on, relevant learning. Having the necessary tools such as math tools, books and technology are ways to achieve these goals.
