I teach military kids on a military post. Our students are AWE-INSPIRING! Could you imagine always being the new kid; having to start over and make new friends every couple of years? Could you imagine having one of your parents deployed for up to a year? It's not easy being a military kid. Yet, instead of dreading school, most of our students love going to school and are eager to learn! Last year, my students had a wide range of abilities—high-achieving, average, and below-level. Some were organized and had good work habits, while others struggled to stay on task. Some were kind and compassionate, while others lacked empathy. However, ALL of them worked hard and wanted to be heard and accepted. This year, I want to make character building and resilience priorities in our classroom. Why not kill two birds with one stone? We will read good literature about how the characters faced or dealt with their challenges.
