One issue many Language Arts teachers face is apathy towards reading. Students come into class already hating it. However, reading, I have found, is a mesmerizing reverse spider web. Once the book catches you in its web, you can't help but devour it. During the school year, I will be using these high interest texts to help my students comprehend complext texts and the intricacies of the author's craft. For example, Unwind, although it is a dystopian science fiction novel, includes actual articles from the present day as dividers between each section. Questions I would pose to my students not only include, "What was the article about?" but also, "Why did the author include this article?" These questions about craft will help my students understand that books are not just about entertainment, but about connecting readers to ideas relevant to our lives.
