I teach 6th grade masterminds who are beautiful and bright, but not always encouraged to read beyond the classroom. My students are witty, creative, inquisitive, and thirsty. They have much to offer, but often do not see the value of their role in the world. They need relevant meaning and purpose to engage them in the learning process. My school is located in a lower socioeconomic area and often my students do not have access to quality literature and meaningful learning activities outside the classroom. Sometimes they lack support in their educational endeavors and are not encouraged to extend their learning outside the walls of the school. My students want to learn. They want to know that the world is theirs and they have a place within it. They want to know that their ideas matter and that they have a powerful voice with which to share their stories and their thoughts. My students need to be empowered with relevant real-world texts that ignite a passion for inquisition in them.
