Social and emotional growth contributes to academic growth. It is much more difficult for students to meet and/or exceed academic expectations if they are struggling emotionally and socially. The Conscious Discipline philosophy and curriculum put forth by Dr. Becky Bailey will provide my students with a fun and engaging way to learn how to name and self-regulate their emotions which will in turn lead to easier academic learning for the rest of their school careers. Our school is requiring each teacher to provide a "safe place" in our classroom for emotional self-regulation and the Feeling Buddies Self- Regulation Toolkit will give me the tools to help students use that "safe place" effectively. Students will have concrete ways to help them name their feelings and specific steps/strategies to use to learn to self-regulate and understand the feelings of others in social situations as well. The Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation toolkit along with other Conscious Discipline resources like the "I Love You Rituals" book/CD and "Brainsmart" songs CD will provide me with lessons and materials to easily fit this social-emotional learning into my kindergarten day. Many of the resources can be also used as part of our morning meeting ritual to build trusting relationships between me and my students as well among the students themselves.
