Our school has such a unique group of students. We are a Title 1 school, which means most of our students fall in the low socioeconomic category. Many of my students do not have access to grade level appropriate books at home. They rely on books from school for reading at home. Of course materials like books that get used so often tend to get lost or misplaced. They also get used by more than 40 children a day and can become worn quickly. Books are so important in learning and especially in 2nd grade. My goal as a teacher is to instill a love or learning and reading in my students. To do this, I need a variety of reading choices for my students. Each student needs approximately 10 to 12 books in their book bag at any given time. Multiply this by 100 kids in our grade level. That is a lot of books to purchase! Most of the time, we buy these books ourselves at garage sales and bargain book stores.
