Technological advances have changed the look of education for the better. Over the last few years I have gone from having a two desktop computer classroom to becoming a 1:1 classroom with touch-screen laptops. This year the Smartboard is going away, and my classroom is moving toward digital projection with a touch screen device. This allows for students to quickly share the device to interact with the presentation, but even more importantly it gets the teacher moving around the room. Smartboards are fantastic, don’t get me wrong. However, computers had to be docked and plugged into the drops where the projector ports were. Switching between programs and presentations bolted the teacher to that area of the room. I am looking forward to the freedom this new addition to my classroom will bring. I will be able to circulate among the students, taking the pulse of the class all while manipulating the presentations and digital activities. The only downside to this new advance is the lack of clear and amplified sound. With a docked and stationary computer, speakers could be plugged in to allow for rich sound to project for all to hear. With a movable device, the sound would only come from the projector speaker, and let’s be honest, the sound is pretty weak. It isn’t going to catch the attention of 25 fifth graders and keep them engaged. It will be especially hard for those students who have hearing issues to be able to clearly hear and process any sound coming from the presentations. I am asking for a portable Bluetooth speaker that I can place in the classroom and pair my device with to allow for richer sound to benefit all learners.
