My students are given 15-20 minutes of independent reading time daily. Teens today often don't choose to read outside of the school setting. Our classroom is comfortable and affords students the time to just read. After students finish reading a book, I meet with them and we discuss it briefly. Students are also allowed to abandon books if the book doesn't hold the student's interest. I try to fill my classroom library with a variety of books. These books requested will have main characters who are Native American, but I have also added books that may not have Native main character but follow our school Core Values of respect, perseverance, caring, and integrity/ accountability. Choosing books to read independently helps students feel they have a ​choice in their education. I hope this choice will build life-long learners who are readers.
