Our students are highly motivated individuals who are excited about learning. We are a title 1 school and all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Our students come to us as 5th graders from a struggling urban school district. They often are several years behind grade level and have difficulty with basic concepts. Our school is adamant about creating a positive and rigorous environment for these students so that they can go onto college. In my classroom students embrace push themselves to become better mathematicians by writing multi-paragraph math essays that explain their thinking, constantly revising their work to deepen their understanding, and being able to not only explain their mathematical thinking, but also critiquing their peers’ mathematical thinking. My students are coming to terms with the fact that math is not just about the right answer, it is about the process of getting there.
