Our middle school is new, yet in a previous old school building. It was an alternative school but they closed it down to offset the overcrowding in the other middle schools. There has been no budget for PE items. Because of boundaries, we are almost all free and reduced lunch and live in the poverty area of our rural town. There are unsafe areas for kids to play, so PE is the only time they get outside and feel free to be kids. We are small, so they don't get the same opportunities as the bigger schools. My students have never played many sports I'm teaching them; softball, football, bowling, badminton. But they do know soccer and basketball. They ask every day... can we play basketball. I say no, not now in PE, wait until lunch. The staff here are so generous with their time and commitment to these kids. We are really trying to increase their self awareness and confidence in academics and in sports. We want them not to feel as they have no chance with the bigger schools.
