My students attend a Montessori Charter Public School which serves children in the Charleston area from 3 years old through Eighth grade. I have a Montessori Primary mixed age classroom of 3, 4 and 5 year olds. We have a beautiful mix of differing ethnicities and socio-economic students. They stay in the same classroom for all three years and move from becoming the newbies to the leaders. They learn from one another and support one another. They use hands-on materials to guide their learning. There is a high level of independence and respect expected in the classroom. The Montessori environment not only supports a high level of academics, but also focuses on the child as a whole. We incorporate independence, self control, time management, respect of other people and things, pride in work, self care, mentoring, and a lifelong love of learning.
