My students LOVE technology and books. So why not combine the two?! Providing literacy opportunities that are fun and exciting would help get my students engaged in the learning process. Many of my students are non-readers, but will pick up a book to look at the pictures. It is my goal, in collaboration with the classroom teachers, to teach them how to read and comprehend books. Many of my students do not have access to books at home, so it is imperative to expose them to as many as I can while they are at school. Having a substantial collection of books would allow me to ensure I have a book that each student would enjoy. Books provide numerous learning opportunities. Books can provide a model for speech sounds and the use of language, as well as basic communication skills. They also provide exposure to new vocabulary words. Not only would the student learn how to answer and ask questions, they can develop interests in new topics. In a school for children with special needs it is important to consider each student's learning style. Many of them require auditory, visual and tactile learning opportunities to gain the most out of a lesson. Engaging all students in a book while targeting their various learning styles can get tricky. All students love technology and computers, so using a laptop to provide access to technology to listen and engage in guided reading would provide an opportunity these students would not otherwise have. It would also keep the children motivated during the lesson, which is the hardest task of all.
