My students are largely pulled from a large urban school district with over 160,000 students. 93% are minorities and 89% are Economically Disadvantaged. The students that find their way to our program have developed their talents through years of hard work and dedication. All students had to audition to earn one of the coveted spots and had to show a history of academic success prior to enrollment. Roughly 15 band musicians are accepted each year to the school and the students are required to maintain excellent grades to keep their spots. The program not only stresses the improvement of a student's play, it also develops their skills in such areas and theory, conducting and composition. The percentage of graduates moving on to post-high schools education far outpaces the rate of our district as a whole. Graduates have gone on to acclaimed musical careers and many have given back to their community by becoming accomplished teachers in their own right.
