At this time in our history, young people need a nuanced understanding of how those in power use language to manipulate the public. There is no better text for this than Orwell's 1984. Our nation is at a crossroads and, as always, education is the key to helping us evolve from reactionary thinking towards discernment. Reading and analyzing this text will give my students tools to understanding history, current events, and a better future for us all. Students will read this text aloud together and then write an essay interpreting the novel's theme and the motivations of one of its main characters, O'Brien.
