Our literacy block is made up of small groups that rotate through different stations. One of the stations is a computer reading program called RAZ Kids. I select each child’s exact reading level (based on assessments) and the program populates many titles that the child can choose from. The books are read aloud as many times as the child needs. There are quizzes at the end to let me know how they are progressing with comprehension and vocabulary. I would like to purchase iPads to use at this literacy station so that students can work independently on their reading instead of sharing technology. Another station is called Current Events. At this station, we currently have students sharing an iPad to use the app called News-o-Matic. This has current events locally and around the world for students to read and is tailored to their reading level. During this station, students listen to the article read aloud, read parts independently, and discuss interesting connections they make to the news stories. During writing time, students listen to the teacher teach a mini-lesson on a specific skill. Then they go off to their desk to be real writers. They work through the writing process at their own pace. Last year, we experimented with an app called Show Me. As students finished their final draft, they used this app to illustrate and record their voice as they drew. The result was fantastic. I believe that the opportunities for students are endless when adequate technology is available to them, and teachers are inspired to seek out new uses. I keep our classroom fun spirited and child centered. I can’t wait to see how excited the students will be when we are able to do so much more! Thank you for your consideration!
