What better way is there to create engaging, meaningful lessons for students than to ask the students themselves about their interests and ideas? During summer school I asked students what they enjoy doing, or wish they could enjoy doing, to be fit and active. I was surprised by the excitement that was generated around the idea of Pokemon Go (a newly popular Smart Phone App in which players walk around in search of mystical Pokemon characters) as a means of being active. Although I cannot justify equipping each student with Pokemon Go, I can create another engaging, educational, active, treasure hunting experience for them with the help of these GPS navigators. From Pirates to Pokemon Go, history shows that treasure hunting is intuitively engaging, captivating, and exciting for all ages. With these GPS navigators, students will learn to navigate outdoors using a compass and latitude/longitude coordinates as they search for hidden "treasures" in local parks. The navigators will also be used to gather statistics on rate, distance, time, and speed. Students will be able to put numbers to their physical activity, which will in turn allow them to make tables and graphs to monitor, examine, and display their physical activity. It is my hope to engage students in learning while also inspiring life-long healthy habits.
