I teach 38 amazing young adults three times a day every other day. If you're quick with math that's almost 200 students. Our high-school has been increasing in enrollment in staggering numbers due to the expanding landscape of the area (our campus was built in 1902 and was primarily for agricultural families, but now we have over 2,500 students) and our classrooms are having trouble catching up! To make matters more complicated, teachers are sharing rooms in order to cover the lack of space on campus; this means that not only are our rooms expected to hold 38 students plus one teacher, but now there will be another teacher sharing my room as well, with all of their things occupying space as well. After some consideration I've come to the conclusion that my room will not be workable without some serious reconfiguration. I would like to swap all of the single, restrictive student desks in favor of a more collaborative single table surrounded by chairs. Not only would this free up much-needed space for general classroom movement and the other teacher and their supplies, but it would also encourage collaborative environment between students, which is imperative for ninth grade English/Language Arts class, where foundational writing skills will take students far beyond their high-school and college experiences.
