One area that my students struggle in is focus and concentration during independent activities. Work time is an important time for my students to show what they know. I am asking my students to give their most creative pieces and have found that when I give them choice of where to sit they get comfortable and perform their best. I believe that by giving them a multitude of alternate seating choices they will be able to find which seating assignment helps them do their best. I also think that where you sit for Math to perform the best could be absolutely different than where you sit for Writing, Science, Literacy, and any other content. I also think that allowing my students choice gives them buy in on their work. Sitting on a chair all day has proven not to be the best way to keep students engaged and achieving their best work. Focus and concentration can be difficult; alternative seating gives my students an opportunity to work on their own in isolation or at a group table. If they are feeling wobbly then they can sit on a wobble stool. If they need a boost then they can sit on a stool. If they want to spread their work out on the floor then they can sit on a mat and spread out on the floor. I believe that alternative seating will give my students multiple spots to work and multiple opportunities to do their best work. My students will have options and opportunities to work in many different areas of my classroom instead of just a chair in one spot.
