My students live unbelievably stressful lives. They live in some of the worst neighborhoods in Minnesota, with the highest crime rates, and the largest achievement gap between themselves and their white peers. They are "invisible geniuses" in a community plagued with poverty, crime, and self-hatred. I cannot change this for them, but I hope to teach them skills that will not only help them pave an educational path to college, but also the character to build them into the happy, successful, healthy adults I know they are. The relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) to adult health are astonishing. The more stress a child is exposed to, the higher the chances are for that child to develop health conditions like heart/liver disease, cancer, addiction, depression, and suicide. It is because of this research that I have realized the need for my students to recognize what stress feels like, and teach them ways to relieve stress in healthy ways.
