These books will enhance the diverse culture we have created within the classroom. My class is made up of 90% African American students. During shared reading, students are engaged in stories that are sometimes difficult for them to relate to. I try to create a classroom library that fosters independence and creative thinking. My students will be able to choose books that reflect who they are and who they aspire to be. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more. With these new books, students can share experiences and see themselves in the characters. Each book was chosen with my students needs in mind. My students have made inquiries about books with characters that look like them. They love reading and celebrating reading with activities that help them connect to the story. With this in mind, their potential for self reflection and self awareness would be limitless with the help of these resources.
