Most of the students I teach come from low-income families. Majority of them receive free or reduced lunch. Because of financial problems in their homes, sometimes they have difficulties with buying simple school supplies. Some of my students walk to school due to lack of money for a bus. Many of my students experience different issues at home which greatly impact their academic and behavioral performance. Their struggles vary from a lack of a parent or both parents (due to death), having a baby while being a student, babysitting siblings, working to support the family, coming from a broken families due to a separation, etc. There are a few homeless students. There are students who live in one basement room with their parents and many siblings. Certainly, they lack of a space or a quiet time to do their homework or study. Some students want to come to school because they know they will at least have a meal that day. Most of my students are Hispanic - and some do not speak any English.
