Every day our students (and their families) work extremely hard to come to school, ready to learn a new language and culture. Many come from low-income households and have faced many challenges--refugee camps, homelessness, interrupted schooling and more--before joining our class. Such a range of ages and previous schooling means there is a need for extremely differentiated learning where students with almost no literacy in their native language learn alongside students who are literate in multiple languages. All of our students need to learn an incredible amount in a very short period of time! This set of Chromebooks will give their efforts a boost as well as connecting them with resources, tools and ideas outside of our classroom. The possibilities for our students with a small group set of Chromebooks are endless! * Laptops would enable students to read books in English beyond what our classroom library could offer through Epic, MackinVia, etc. as well as books in their native languages, which is essential for their academic growth and social-emotional well being. * The range in ages and levels of education in our classroom means that teaching math requires many different levels and groupings. Laptops would enable students to practice the skills and concepts that they need individually through IXL, i Ready and other sites. * Google Classroom and Seesaw would enable students to build a multimedia portfolio of their work in English and have conversations with peers about each other's work, collaborating and giving them even more opportunities for practice. * Google Slides, Screencastify, Book Creator and other tools could be used for presentations and project work, building students' confidence in both speaking and writing in English while they share their stories or pursue research topics that interest them.
