My students are bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. About 50% of them come from Spanish speaking families, and 50% of them come from English speaking homes. Together, we work to maintain their birth language, while challenging them to embrace a second language. "New studies are showing that a multilingual brain is nimbler, quicker, better able to deal with ambiguities, resolve conflicts and even resists Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia longer." -TIME Starting in kindergarten, our students spend half their day with an English dominate teacher, and the other half of their day with a Spanish dominate teacher. By the time they graduate from our program in the 8th grade, every student is bilingual, biliterate and bicultural. What are my 3rd graders like? Well most of the time they are like a box of squirrels. I'm only kidding. One of the things that I impress upon my students is that there should be surprises in whatever they write. My students are delightful little 8 year olds!
