Our Kindergarten is an arts-based magnet school located in the heart of the delta. The 2021-2022 school year will be my fourth year of teaching, all on the kindergarten level. Over the past few years of behavior observation, as well as academic observation, many things have become clearer to me, one of them being that Kindergarteners thrive in a non-restrictive environment that offers them choices - especially when it comes to seating. In an article for Mind Research Institute, Calli Wright (2021) wrote, "Flexible seating gives students the option to control their physical environments in which they work best. In other words, with choices, students gain greater flexibility and control of their surroundings giving them the autonomy and comfort to stay engaged and focused. This leads to increased student engagement which is linked to higher motivation and academic performance, as well as improved overall behavior." Just as Calli Wright (2021) stated in her article for Mind Research Institute, I believe that offering my students choices and comfort in the classroom will improve behavior and increase engagement; however, switching from traditional seating to flexible seating is extremely costly. It is my desire as an educator to provide the most open, engaging, motivating environment possible for my students to learn through collaboration and imagination, and I need YOUR help to make it happen with funding for a project picnic table, comfy bean bag chairs, balance ball seats, and lap desks!
