Dale Dougherty, the founder of MAKE magazine and Maker Faire believes that children should "approach science and technology not as an abstract, but [as] something very concrete they can engage with, have fun with...The idea of a makerspace right now combines elements of old shop classes, computer labs, and art." STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities will especially help my middle school ESL students, classified students, students of low economic background, and female students to become interested in careers related to these fields, and to create long-term goals. Our middle school is a diverse high-needs school of about 1,400 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Almost 50% qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many of our students receive services, including ESL, special education, and academic intervention.
