My students struggle learning math in the classroom and need a different approach when they visit me in the math lab for small group instruction. Math is all around us and it is essential my students gain the skills necessary to count, compare numbers, add, and subtract. My students need to see and touch math, to better understand how it relates to their lives and interest. Students who struggle in math will often choose to use manipulatives because the visuals are less intimidating. Helping students visualize math first builds a strong foundation for understanding how numbers work and allow students to easily move to represent the visuals on paper and later using numbers. My students achieve success with mathematics when they use manipulatives and being able to display them will take their learning and understanding to the next level.
