Foreign language learners not only need to learn the verbs and vocabulary, but also be immersed in the culture. It has been studied that watching movies in the target language helps with the language acquisition. I have been showing students a movie in the target language and have them write down words they recognize while watching the movie. This triggers not only the watching learning portion, but also the listening portion which is very important in the learning process. At the beginning of the year some students wrote only 4 words and by the end of the year, they were writing a minimum of 150 words. The problem I have encountered is some movies can only be bought in Europe. The movies I have found are available in Blu-ray, therefore there are possibilities of having tracks in different languages. Also, the European DVD system is different from ours and therefore will not play on our US DVD players. I would find it to be an important purchase to have a Region Free Blue-ray Player to enhance the language learning process for my classroom and my learners.
