Students in our charter school come from a low income area but are interested in using technology, especially smart phones and video game consoles. During school hours, each student is assigned a laptop for the day, but their experience with this technology is limited to surfing the internet and playing games. With my video game design class, students learn how to go beyond just consuming technology; they learn to design it. Using video games as a hook, my students learn to master the basics of computer coding, problem solving, logical thinking, and team work. It is a great way to expose them to a career they hadn't even considered before when sitting in front of their X-box systems.
