We have begun a school-wide intervention for 45 minutes in the middle of the school day. Students travel to different classrooms for the nine weeks for focus on a skills in which they need additional practice or receive some enrichment for skills they already have mastered. Utilizing technology and creative learning helps keep scholars engaged in learning. The Hot Dots Reading along with the Close Reading questions cover everything we learn throughout the school year in 5th and 6th grade. Students can use these cards as a review back at their seats. There are 4 multiple choice answers they can pick from. When the child uses the Hot Dot Pen, they instantly get a sound and a green light if they get that answer right. If it is wrong, they hear a different sound and it is a red light. This allows the teacher to be working with small groups while other students are reviewing reading skills with the Hot Dots. The students using the Hot Dots are working independently, but still getting that important feedback. Students that require intervention often become bored and uninterested in the needed learning, as it is often repetitious, with reading through center work using hot dots and other resources students are instantly engaged. This engagement allows to students to learn without feeling bored or uninterested in the topics and skills they require intervention in.
