We start our day together on our carpet sharing and building oral language. This is where we spend a lot of time together as a classroom family. I always do our literacy lessons and read-alouds from the carpet. After our literacy lesson, students go to stations. They love to match letters of the alphabet on the carpet. They even find objects that begin with that letter's sound. My favorite thing they do is to play teacher. I love to hear them say, "Show me the letter M." or "Whose name begins with this letter?" The alphabet carpet is such a great instructional tool that we use in many ways in our classroom. The carpet has soothing color tones which often helps the students to feel calm and relaxed. It also serves as a great tactile opportunity for students who need to touch the letters, which ultimately transfers over to their writing.
