My students need a holistic educational environment where their intellectual needs can be matched with their physical and emotional ones. At my middle school ALL students are required to take dance. This bonds us together as a learning community. I designed the dance curriculum sequentially to prepare students for New York City Performing Arts High School auditions as well as to introduce all students in the school to dance as a form of art and expression. My school is located in an urban and finincially resource poor neighborhood. 100% of the students in the school receive free lunch. The student population is 98% Hispanic and 2% African American. Approximately 25% of the student body is made up of Special Needs students. About 50% of the students are English Language Learners. What we lack in finances my students make up with their newfound dedication to study dance.
